Sunday will mark the first day of Summer.

It also marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

The summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous Peoples, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

The SRD encourages residents to learn more about events taking place throughout the region.

In Campbell River, activities for the whole family are planned throughout the day on Sunday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm offering opportunities to learn, celebrate, and reflect on reconciliation.

The day begins with a Father’s Day breakfast at the Community Centre, followed by opening ceremonies and cultural performances at the CR Big House beginning at 10 a.m., and a march to Robert Ostler Park at 11:30 a.m.

The Comox Valley will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Saturday with a full afternoon and evening of culture, music, food, and community.

Events will take place at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
