Because of the continuing low overnight temperatures in the forecast, the City of Campbell River is opening a warming centre at the Campbell River Community Centre again tonight, from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. Friday morning.
The City earlier extended the opening last night, til 7am this morning. It was the same story for warming centres in the Comox Valley, although CVRD staff haven’t said anything about the Valley for tonight.
The Campbell River Warming Centre is staffed by individuals who have experience working with people experiencing homelessness, so that necessary support is available.
It’s open to everyone for short-term stays and is a place for vulnerable populations to come in, warm up, and be provided with information on resources available to them.
The service supplements overnight shelter beds and daytime services already available within the community, such as Kwesa Place, Evergreen Shelter and Housing, and the 40 temporary housing units with support services on Homewood Road.
The City will notify the public of upcoming Warming Centre activations and operating hours on its website and social media channels, as does the CVRD.
