Wei Wai Kum First Nation has broken ground on a Nation-owned hotel beside Discovery Harbour Marina in Campbell River.

The 140-room hotel will operate as part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.

Plans include a full-service waterfront restaurant, rooftop space, a 10,000-square-foot spa and wellness facility, and 5,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

Wei Wai Kum leaders, community members, municipal officials and project partners gathered last week for a traditional land blessing and groundbreaking ceremony.

The ceremony also honoured the site’s history: people who took part in the original Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre groundbreaking returned, and a ceremonial shovel carved by Master Carver Bill Henderson more than 30 years ago was used once again at the ceremony.

Chief Councillor Chris Roberts says the project will honour the Nation’s cultural values and traditions while strengthening its economy and creating opportunities for future generations. Cultural expression and storytelling will be incorporated throughout the hotel.

The development is expected to bring new employment, tourism and business activity to Campbell River. Construction is getting underway, with an opening anticipated in spring 2029.
