Comox Strathcona Waste Management is asking residents to postpone dropping off mattresses at the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres unless disposal is absolutely necessary.

The request follows Sunday’s fire at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre in Cumberland. The fire was contained to the mattress disposal area, but it damaged a major piece of equipment and temporarily reduced the region’s ability to store and dispose of mattresses.

Officials say the fire was detected early and fully extinguished. No injuries were reported.

Used oil is also temporarily not being accepted at either waste management centre. Normal used-oil service is expected to resume Monday, September 21.
