The Campbell River Blind Curling Team travelled to Winnipeg last week to compete in the Western Canadian Championships.
The team says it had the full Winnipeg experience of wind, snow and freezing temperatures and very good curlers with a little local whisky on the side.
They did pretty well on the ice, losing just one game and placing second in the tournament.
The team’s coach, Bruce Laurie, says it was a liberating experience for the blind curlers; to play together and all compete on an equal playing field.
He said support from the Campbell River club and local businesses made this event doable for them and they can’t wait for next season.
Laurie is also putting the call out for more curlers. If you know someone blind or with low vision, Laurie says it’s a great activity to get out and enjoy. You can contact him at the Campbell River Curling Club for more info.
