Go By Bike Week continues to roll through British Columbia - and, in Courtenay, Arden Elementary is holding Bike, Walk, n' Roll Week as part of the schools’ Active Travel Pilot Program activities.

Last spring, Arden was announced as one of 12 schools across the province taking part this year in the Active School Travel Pilot Program.

The school is encouraging families to try out new Walking/Biking School Bus routes and have just wrapped up their first "Wheelie Wednesday, " to bike around the closed school parking lot at recess and lunch playtimes.

Families can participate in the fun, whether it is traveling in active ways every day this week, or just one day, part way, or one way.

• Try dropping your child off at the Church Parking lot (not supervised this time--so please review safe walking route out the back end of the lot)
• Try walking or rolling to with your child to/from their school bus stop instead of dropping them in the car
•Try joining in one of our three supervised Walking School Bus Routes (please read guidelines and expectations to see if this is a good fit for your child).
•Try biking/walking on your own route with your family or friends to get to school this week!
•Try bringing your bike or scooter to school on Wednesday for the first ever Wheelie Wednesday to bike around the CLOSED parking school parking lot at recess and lunch playtimes!

In May, Arden hosted a neighbourhood walk-about safety audit with community officials and SD71 staff to discuss some of the concerns in the neighbourhood. This walk-about highlighted various safety concerns and some of the issues have already been addressed.

Recent improvements were fast-tracked by the City of Courtenay after councilors attended the May walk-about and recommended the prioritization of safety initiatives on Lake Trail and Cumberland Roads, including new lighted pedestrian crossings and improvements to surrounding School Zone signage.
