Construction work on a parking expansion project near the Big Rock Boat Ramp in Campbell River has been temporarily halted following the discovery of an archaeological artifact.
The City says work was underway at the site near the Seawalk and Big Rock Boat Ramp on Island Highway South when a lithic artifact was uncovered during demolition activities.
Under B.C.'s Heritage Conservation Act, a qualified archaeologist has been brought in to assess the site. City officials are also working with the Province and consulting with local First Nations to determine the next steps.
The area has been secured while the review takes place, and the material is being treated as a protected heritage resource.
The City says archaeological findings can hold significant cultural and historical value and is committed to ensuring any materials discovered are handled with care and respect.
There is no updated timeline for the project at this point.
Officials say more information will be released once the archaeological assessment is complete.
