Statistics Canada is out with new data from the 2021 census and many in British Columbia won't be surprised by the results.

Statistics Canada is out with new data from the 2021 census and many in British Columbia won't be surprised by the results.

BC has the highest rate of unaffordable homes in Canada and also leads the country in the number of renter households.

Home ownership is dropping in the province, with almost 67 percent of families owning their home last year.

That's down from 70 percent in 2011.

Overall, the national home ownership rate is on the decline with young adults in particular.

Young adults were less likely to own a home in 2021 than they were in 2011.

The national home ownership rate fell from 69 percent in 2011 to 66.5 per cent in 2021.

In addition to data on home ownership, StatsCan is also reporting that Indigenous children are overrepresented in the child welfare system, and that hasn't changed in the last five years.

The census data shows Indigenous children accounted for 53.8 percent of all kids in care.

Status First Nations children make up the highest percentage of kids in care within Indigenous groups, while Metis children account for the lowest.
