Some Comox and Courtenay residents have already seen some new hardware needed as the automated curbside collection service gets set to roll in in the new year.

Cart delivery has begun, and will continue over the next few months, for the service launching in January for garbage, recycling, and organics (food and yard) waste.

“We are excited about what this means for the City. By bringing our waste collection service in line with other cities in the province, we will increase efficiency, improve reliability, and reduce the risk of workplace injuries,” says City of Courtenay Mayor, Bob Wells.

“The shift to automated collection, will have a positive impact on our community and we expect to see a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions generated by the collection vehicles as well as increased diversion of materials from our landfill. This is a critical step towards increasing our diversion targets to 90% of residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional waste, including 100% of organic waste, by 2050, as set in our Official Community Plan.”

Individual carts will be delivered to households at various points throughout the fall, with all three carts arriving by the end of November. Residents must continue using their current waste and recycling containers until the rollout of the new service in January.

An information guide is available for residents in each jurisdiction with additional information on the new program.

The guide will be included with the cart delivery. Residents may also download or review the guide from the municipal website in advance.

Courtenay and Comox residents are also encouraged to visit their local government website for a list of FAQs on the delivery of their new carts and the transition to the new automated collection service.

If you have not received your carts by November 30, 2023, contact either Courtenay’s or the Comox public works department, depending on where you live.
