Community members are invited to take part in a native-species planting event at Willow Creek this afternoon.
The event is being organized by the Homalco First Nation in partnership with the Strathcona Regional District, Greenways Land Trust and the Nature Trust of B.C.
Volunteers will work along the creek from 4:30 until 6 p.m., planting native vegetation to help improve and protect the surrounding habitat.
Native plants can help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion and strengthen the creek bank. They also provide food and shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife, supporting the long-term health of the local ecosystem.
The planting area is located a short walk from Martin Road, below the bridge near the wooden fences.
Organizers are encouraging residents to lend a hand, learn more about local restoration efforts and make a direct contribution to the health of Willow Creek.
Residents interested in participating or learning more about the project can contact Camille Andrews, Habitat Management Coordinator with Greenways Land Trust, by emailing camille@greenwaystrust.ca, or calling 250-287-3785.
Additional information about the restoration initiative is available at Homalco First Nation's Land and Fresh Water Stewardship.
