Conservation officers continue searching for one or more bears following a suspected grizzly attack that killed a mother and daughter near Bella Coola.
Family members reported Jenny Balcarras and her 20-year-old daughter, Selah Reed, missing on Sunday after losing contact with them.
Balcarras was found dead Monday in the Snooka West Trail area. Reed was located Tuesday afternoon during a search involving the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and RCMP.
Evidence discovered at the scene suggests an animal was involved, although investigators have not confirmed exactly what happened or whether one or several bears were responsible.
Traps have been placed in the area, but the Conservation Officer Service said no bears had been captured as of Wednesday afternoon.
Any animals located will be assessed as part of the investigation. A bear determined to have been involved in the deaths will be euthanized under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.
Officials remain in contact with the Nuxalk Nation, the victims’ family and members of the wider Bella Coola community as the investigation continues.
Residents and visitors are being strongly urged to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area until authorities determine it is safe to return.
