Strathcona Gardens Entrance Closes As Construction Moves Ahead

Visitors to Strathcona Gardens will need to use alternate entrances as construction moves into the next stage of the REC-REATE project.

The facility’s front entrance is now closed while work proceeds on new fitness, wellness and shared spaces at the Campbell River recreation complex. People attending arena activities, fitness-studio programs or outdoor fitness can continue accessing the main reception desk through the Arena 2 entrance or the doors off Pinecrest Road.

A separate temporary entrance and reception desk are being established at the new Aquatic Centre for people attending pre-registered swims and aquatic-fitness programs. Visitors will be able to access that entrance from the parking area in front of the new pool building, with signs directing them along the construction fencing. Reception hours will be announced as the opening approaches.

The changes come as the new Aquatic Centre prepares to welcome its first public swimmers on Thursday, October 29.

Registration opens Wednesday, October 21, with spaces available eight days before each swim. Advance registration will initially be required, and the regional district says that system will continue until swims are no longer operating at capacity. Swimming lessons are scheduled to begin in January 2027.

Bookings can be made through the Strathcona Gardens drop-in schedules page. Anyone registering for a family or caregiver rate, or needing assistance, can call Strathcona Gardens at 250-830-6777.

While the pools are nearing their public opening, construction will continue on the remaining portions of the Aquatic and Wellness project.

“Phase 1 of the REC-REATE project also includes an incredible new Wellness Centre for fitness and rehabilitation,” the Strathcona Regional District says on its project page.

The former pool area will be renovated to accommodate larger fitness spaces beside the new Wellness Centre, which will include treatment and assessment rooms for physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. Additional improvements include change rooms, multipurpose and meeting spaces, a renovated lobby and a new reception area.

The remaining fitness and wellness improvements are expected to be completed in summer 2027. Design plans and project updates are available at REC-REATE Strathcona Gardens.
