The federal government is investing $12.7 million to support Indigenous-led research projects across Canada.
In a release, the government says the investment is aimed at advancing reconciliation by strengthening Indigenous leadership in research and decision-making.
The money will support 42 projects led by First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, with a focus on addressing challenges identified by Indigenous Peoples and developing solutions grounded in their own values, priorities and knowledge systems.
The funding is being delivered through Canada’s three federal research agencies and includes support for Indigenous research collaboration, leadership development, and expanded research networks.
That includes nearly $800 thousand for 16 First Nations and Métis projects, more than $1.8 million to establish 25 Indigenous research networks, and a $10 million investment over four years to expand the Inuit Research Network.
The government says the funding will also help protect and revitalize Indigenous languages, traditions and knowledge passed down through generations.
Additional funding is expected later this year as part of the next phase of the Indigenous Innovation and Leadership in Research Network program.
