An evening of storytelling, songs and traditional teachings in Cumberland will help preserve an Elder’s knowledge for future generations.

Anishinaabe-Métis Elder Keith Redheart, known to many as Uncle Keith, will present “Words from the Old Ones” at Weird Church on Saturday, November 14.

Keith has lived on Vancouver Island for almost 40 years. During the gathering, he will share stories, songs and teachings from Turtle Island, along with knowledge passed to him by Elders throughout his life.

Organizers describe the evening as an opportunity for community members to sit together, listen, laugh and learn. There will also be time for audience questions.

The gathering will be recorded in audio and video as part of a legacy project preserving Keith’s teachings and stories for future generations.

Proceeds from the evening will support the project’s video-documentation work.

“Words from the Old Ones” runs from 7 to 9 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30.

General admission is $25, with a Pay What You Choose option available for anyone needing greater flexibility or wishing to contribute more.

Seating is limited. Tickets are available online through Tickit and may also be purchased at the door, subject to availability.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
