BC Hydro Reminds Residents To Stay 10 Metres From Damaged Power Lines

With fall storms capable of bringing down trees and electrical infrastructure, BC Hydro is reminding residents that two numbers could save a life around a damaged power line: 10 metres and 9-1-1.

Anyone encountering a fallen, sagging, damaged or unusually low-hanging power line should remain at least 10 metres away—approximately the length of a transit bus—and immediately call emergency services.

Every damaged line should be treated as energized and dangerous, even when it is not visibly sparking, smoking, moving or making any sound.

BC Hydro says electricity can travel through the ground surrounding a downed line, creating a serious hazard for anyone who approaches it.

Nearby trees, fences, vehicles and other objects touching the wire could also become energized and must not be approached.

Residents should keep other people and pets away from the area while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.

BC Hydro has also released a series of short online quizzes designed to test residents’ knowledge of electrical safety, storm preparation and unexpected power outages.

People who complete the quizzes can enter for an opportunity to win an emergency-preparedness kit containing supplies for storms and other emergencies.

To learn more and to take the quiz, visit BC Hydro.
