Y-Q-Cuties Comfort Pet Program Launches to Support Travellers

Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 10:50 AM

Travellers passing through the Comox Valley Airport will soon be welcomed by some extra-friendly faces.

A new comfort pet program called Y-Q-Cuties is launching at YQQ, bringing trained dog-and-handler teams into the terminal to help reduce travel stress and create a more welcoming airport experience.

The dogs will interact with passengers who may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or simply in need of a positive moment before their flight. Airport officials say the initiative is part of YQQ’s continued focus on improving passenger experience and supporting traveller well-being.

Comox Valley Airport CEO Mike Atkins says air travel can be an emotional experience, whether someone is heading off on vacation or travelling for work. He says the program is a simple but meaningful way to create a calmer, more human airport experience and help travellers start their journey on a positive note.

The comfort pet program is being delivered in partnership with Freedom Paws Canada, a nationally recognized organization that provides highly trained service dogs and therapy dog teams across the country.

Freedom Paws Canada Executive Director Barb Ashmead says the organization is proud to partner with the Comox Valley Airport on the Y-Q-Cuties program, which offers calm and supportive canine interactions. She notes the comfort dog initiative operates separately from the group’s psychological service dog training program, giving them the opportunity to share the calming presence of their dogs with the broader community.

At YQQ, comfort pet visits will take place periodically throughout the terminal. The dog-and-handler teams will be clearly identified and available to interact with travellers of all ages.

The first teams will begin visits today, with dog teams scheduled each week year-round. Participation is optional, and airport officials say the program is designed to be inclusive and accessible for passengers.
