The Strathcona Regional District and the City of Campbell River say they are exploring options for a potential third arena at Strathcona Gardens, following feedback from community members and facility users.
In a short update yesterday, the two partners say the idea is still in the early stages and there is still more work to be done - but more information is expected soon.
The potential arena is being considered as part of the broader REC-REATE project at Strathcona Gardens.
The long-term plan focuses on modernizing and expanding the aging recreation complex, which first opened in the early 1970s and is jointly owned by the regional district and the City of Campbell River.
The project is intended to renew the facility so it can better serve the growing region, with upgrades and new spaces designed to support recreation, health and community programs for decades to come.
Earlier phases of the planning process have focused on replacing aging infrastructure and improving amenities at the complex, including aquatic and wellness facilities.
Community engagement has been a key part of the project, with residents, user groups and sports organizations providing feedback on what they want to see included in future upgrades.
