Authorities in Australia say a Campbell River teenager who died earlier this year on a popular tourist island drowned after being attacked by dingoes.
The Coroners Court of Queensland has ruled that 19-year-old Piper James died as a result of drowning “in the setting of multiple injuries” caused by a dingo attack.
James was found dead on a beach on K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, on January 19. Her body was discovered early that morning near a group of about 10 dingoes.
A forensic pathologist determined that while James had suffered several bite wounds from the animals, those injuries were not believed to be immediately fatal. Instead, investigators say she drowned during the attack.
In the weeks following the incident, several dingoes believed to be part of the pack involved were euthanized by wildlife officials, a decision that sparked debate among conservation groups and the island’s traditional owners.
K’gari is home to about 200 dingoes, which are a protected and culturally significant species on the island.
