Construction is now underway on a new viewing platform at Mack Laing Nature Park in Comox.
The Town has moved into the build phase following the removal of the Shakesides building, with a Cultural Heritage Investigation Permit now in place.
The new platform will be constructed on the original foundation, giving visitors the same views Mack Laing once enjoyed.
The project follows years of planning and consultation, including work with K’ómoks First Nation, and was made possible after the B.C. Supreme Court approved changes to the terms of Laing’s trust in 2023.
The naturalist, ornithologist, artist and photographer donated, in trust, the seaside home and property in 1973 to the Town for the public to enjoy.
The platform is expected to open in the fall.
The total project budget is just over $680 thousand, with funding coming from trust funds and the Town’s long-term financial plan.
During construction, the Town is asking people using nearby trails to follow posted signage and stay clear of work areas.
