The City of Campbell River opened an overnight warming centre last night in response to low temperatures.
When the warming centre is activated, out of the Campbell River Community Centre, people can get in from the cold between 10pm and 7am.
The space is open to everyone for short-term stays and is intended to provide a safe place for people to warm up during cold weather, particularly those who are more vulnerable.
Guests may bring pets on leashes, along with personal belongings, including bikes and carts. Bikes and carts will be stored in an outdoor area.
Hot drinks, snacks, and seating will be available, although beds are not provided.
The warming centre is staffed by workers experienced in supporting people experiencing homelessness and also provides information on available community resources.
The overnight operation is a collaborative effort involving City staff, local social service organizations, volunteers, and contractors.
Funding for the warming centre is provided by the Province through Emergency Management Climate Readiness, with additional support from the City.
The City says warming centres may be activated overnight at the City Manager’s discretion when provincial temperature thresholds are met.
