Asbestos-containing materials have been identified following water damage at Fire Hall No. 1 in Campbell River.

The damage occurred when recent heavy rain and strong winds allowed water to enter the building through an exposed section of its roof, which is currently being replaced.

Before water-damaged building materials could be removed, a hazardous-materials survey was completed to identify any potential risks to employees, contractors and others involved in the cleanup.

That assessment confirmed the presence of asbestos-containing materials within the affected area.

The discovery means the damaged materials will require specialized handling and removal procedures before cleanup and repairs can safely continue. Measures must be taken to prevent asbestos fibres from being disturbed or released during the work.

Officials have not indicated how long the additional remediation will take or whether the incident has affected emergency-response operations at the fire hall.

Emergency services continue as usual, with no impacts to fire suppression or 9-1-1 dispatch expected.

In an emergency, call 9-1-1. For other, non-emergency, fire department inquiries, contact fire@campbellriver.ca, call 250-286-6266 or visit Campbell River City Hall.
