A man described by police as “acting erratically” is believed to have damaged vehicles in downtown Campbell River early Tuesday.

A 28-year-old Campbell River man is facing a mischief charge following an early morning incident in the city’s downtown core.

Campbell River RCMP say an officer was on patrol shortly after 3:30 am Tuesday morning when they encountered a man acting erratically as he was attempting to make his way home from the downtown area.

During the interaction, police noticed damage to vehicles nearby. Further investigation determined the man was responsible for the damage, and he was arrested for mischief.

The suspect has since been released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Police say the investigation into the vehicle damage is continuing and are asking anyone with information or CCTV footage from the area to contact the Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221.

In a separate statement, the City of Campbell River confirmed the incident resulted in vandalism and damage to several local businesses downtown.

Mayor and Council say they are angered by what happened and acknowledge the impact incidents like this have on small, family-run businesses that invest their livelihoods in the community.

The City says it continues to work closely with the RCMP as the investigation moves forward.

The City noted that while recent data shows an overall downward trend in property crime in 2025, incidents like this highlight the need to remain focused on improving downtown safety and supporting local businesses.
