More children can now access and enjoy the playground at Pinecrest Elementary following the completion of a major accessibility improvement.
School District 72 has replaced a significant portion of the playground’s wood-chip surface with rubberized material made from recycled British Columbia tires.
The smoother surface improves safety and provides easier access for children using wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility aids, allowing more students to play alongside their classmates.
The project received a $19,328 grant from Tire Stewardship BC’s Community Grant Program, which supports projects using recycled tire materials produced within the province. School District 72 matched the contribution through its Annual Facilities Grant.
District secretary-treasurer Kevin Patrick said the partnership helped the district make an important improvement that gives more children an opportunity to enjoy the playground.
The resurfacing builds on a $198,000 provincial investment that brought new playground equipment to Pinecrest in 2024. Together, the improvements have created a safer, more accessible and inclusive recreational space.
The benefits also extend beyond the school day. Pinecrest’s playground is frequently used by Campbell River children and families during evenings, weekends and school breaks.
School District 72 says the project forms part of its continuing effort to improve accessibility across local schools and programs, providing students and families with more equitable access to learning, recreation and participation.
