On Saturday, from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., the Strathcona Regional District’s Emergency Communications Team will be assisting Scouts Canada with their worldwide Jamboree-On-The-Air exercise.

It’s an annual event in which Scouts all over the world connect with each other by means of amateur radio.

The majority of activities during this exercise will take place at the Campbell River Search and Rescue Hall and at the Willow Point Park Trails.

“We are thrilled to have such tremendous support and membership from SRD’s Emergency Communications Team,” said Jed Jackson, Troop Contact Scouter for 1st Willow Point Troop.

“The use of amateur radio techniques offers an extra educational dimension for Scouts. Many grasp the opportunity to discover the world of wireless radio techniques and electronics.”

The SRD invites members of the public who wish to learn more about how amateur radio provides support during a disaster to drop by, observe, and ask questions.

There will be 14 Scouts from the Campbell River area anticipated to participate in this exercise.

The Emergency Communications Team serves as a “Plan B” option when primary communications systems are challenged or disabled.

SRD’s team of Amateur Radio Operators are volunteers who offer their time and expertise in the aid of emergency planning, response, and recovery efforts. Other backup services include commercial radio frequencies, satellite devices, and marine radio.

You can learn more by visiting Strathcona Regional District.
