A working smoke alarm could earn some Comox Valley residents a free pizza next month as local fire departments deliver an important safety reminder during Fire Prevention Week.

Domino’s Pizza is once again partnering with the Courtenay and Comox fire departments for the campaign on Friday, October 9.

Between 5 and 9 p.m., residents of single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses in Courtenay and Comox can place an order through the participating Domino’s location in their community.

Some customers will have their pizza delivered with the help of local firefighters, who will arrive by fire truck and ask permission to inspect the home’s smoke alarms.

Customers selected for the promotion will receive their pizza for free if their smoke alarms are working properly.

Households will be chosen at random, with firefighter participation depending on the availability of emergency-response resources.

If an alarm requires new batteries, firefighters will replace them.

Eligible households without a working alarm may also be offered a return visit to have a battery-powered smoke alarm installed at no cost.

The campaign is part of Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 4 to 10 and focuses this year on the safe purchase, charging and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Fire officials recommend using chargers supplied or approved by the manufacturer, charging devices on hard surfaces and unplugging them once they are fully charged.

Batteries should also be taken to an appropriate recycling location rather than placed in household garbage or recycling.
