Residents and visitors to Cortes Island can expect to see an increased emergency response presence this weekend as local and provincial crews take part in a large-scale wildfire training exercise.
The Strathcona Regional District says members of the Cortes Island Fire Department and the BC Wildfire Service will conduct the exercise on Saturday, June 14, from about 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
More than 40 firefighters and wildfire personnel will be involved, using sprinklers, pumps, hand lines and other wildfire suppression equipment as part of the training.
The exercise will take place around the Manson's area, including the Co-op, Manson's Hall, the Fire Hall and surrounding locations.
The SRD is reminding the public that the activity is only a training exercise and there is no emergency.
Officials say the event will help local and provincial crews strengthen their wildfire preparedness and response capabilities ahead of the wildfire season.
Residents are being asked for their patience and support during the exercise as crews work to keep Cortes Island wildfire ready.
