A wildfire discovered yesterday near Nanaimo is burning out of control and evacuation alerts are in place.

The Wesley Creek fire, discovered after midnight Thursday, is 60 hectares in size at last check, growing significantly through the day.

The Regional District of Nanaimo issued  evacuation orders and alerts for nearby residents.

The fire is on the opposite side of the lake from highway 4, north side of Cameron Lake.

BC Wildfire services says as it is an emerging incident, and while highway 4 is not impacted at this time, they were asking all travellers using highway 4 to be mindful of crews working in the area, proceed with caution, stay focused on the road and maintain a steady flow of traffic.

As of Friday morning, there are currently 120 wildfires burning in British Columbia, several out of control.

Stay up to date with the wildfire situation at BC Wildfire Service.
