Volunteers are needed this afternoon for a pair of gatherings in support of protecting the Simms Creek area.

The “Sign Up for Simms Creek” events will see people gathering to hold signs and raise awareness about proposed development near the salmon-bearing creek.

The first gathering runs from 2 to 3 p.m. on the east side of Alder Hill, between Rockland and Cottonwood.

A second gathering will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. along Highway 19A at the Simms Creek Estuary.

Organizers say the events are intended to show community opposition to proposed development, which they argue is in the wrong location.

People are encouraged to bring friends and family, although organizers say young children should not attend because of road safety concerns.

Parking along Highway 19A is limited, and organizers recommend parking on the west side of Alder Hill, in front of the Sportsplex.

They’re also reminding participants to use designated crosswalks when crossing the road.
