The Village of Cumberland is working in partnership with landowners and other stakeholders toward a joint conservation plan for lands at Comox Lake and Lower Perseverance Creek.

The goal is based on the underlying values of drinking water protection, ecological protection, hydrological function, and cultural values.

In 2018, the Comox Valley Regional District purchased a 113-acre parcel of land at the east end of Comox Lake for watershed protection purposes. Since that time, the CVRD has engaged with K’ómoks First Nation (KFN), other jurisdictions, landowners, and stakeholders to build support for a planning process.

Last year, the Cumberland Community Forest Society (CCFS) finalized the purchase of the 44-acre Lower Perseverance Creek corridor, immediately adjacent to and providing access to the CVRD property, to protect, restore and steward the lands in perpetuity and to align the conservation and management plans with neighbouring properties.

Signs have been placed on the property to provide the public with an update on the status of the land, and to indicate that a planning process is underway.

It’s hoped that a draft Conservation Plan will be ready by the end of the year.
