The Village of Cumberland has a reminder for residents - cougars and bears live here!
The Village issued a release saying residents should be aware that cougar sightings are most common during the night and early morning and to take precautions with pets and small children.
Although cougars will normally avoid a confrontation, all cougars are unpredictable, so never approach one, especially if it's feeding.
The release says to stay calm - and pick children up off the ground immediately.
As they frighten easily, their rapid movements may provoke an attack.
If a cougar attacks, it’s suggested you fight back with anything, including rocks, sticks, bare fists, and fishing poles.
The Village says seeing a cougar should be an exciting and rewarding experience, however, if you do experience a confrontation with a cougar or feel threatened by one, immediately inform the British Columbia Conservation Foundation at 1-877-952-7277.
