
It is the Victoria Day Long weekend.
Community members are reminded that most municipal buildings in the area will be closed on Monday - including Town Halls and Community Centres, the Sportsplex - if you are making any plans for Monday it is best to check ahead.
There will be no curbside collection on Monday, May 19, 2025.
There will be free transit on Monday in the Comox Valley, courtesy of BC Transit and the Comox Valley Regional District.
On holiday Monday, buses will be running on a Saturday schedule - and free transit will be available on all routes.
There are many events in our listening area to enjoy with the family over the weekend, including the 137th Cumberland Victoria Day Celebrations and the 23rd annual Art & Bloom Festival.
The Province, along with BC Wildfire Service are encouraging residents and long-weekend travellers to plan ahead, be prepared and stay safe.
The Province says at this time of year, most new wildfires are preventable, and people are being asked to take precautions with any fire use this weekend.
People should stay up to date on current wildfire activity, check for road closures, evacuation alerts and evacuation orders, and pay attention to weather conditions.
Thankfully, a fire near Woods Creek that was sparked on the weekend was officially listed as under control by Tuesday.
About 30 Campbell River firefighters responded to the fire in the south end of the community shortly after 11am on Sunday.
Campbell River Fire also got support from the Oyster River Fire Department and Mosaic Forest Management.
As of Wednesday, May 14, 2025, there were 28 active wildfires burning in B.C, 9 of which are considered out of control.
Currently, no fire prohibitions on Category 2 and 3 open burning are in place for Vancouver Island, but there are in the Cariboo Fire Centre and parts of the Northwest Fire Centre, and Kamloops.
B.C. continues to receive below-average precipitation for this time of year, which is having a lasting impact on water levels, and there is potential for prolonged drought this year.
People are encouraged to take steps to use water more efficiently and plan for potential drought conditions.
Drivers on routes throughout the province should expect higher-than-average traffic volumes and plan accordingly.
