Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit Still Seeking Witnesses To Fatal Hit And Run

Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 6:51 AM

By Jay Herrington

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit continues to canvas for any potential witnesses to a fatal hit and run from earlier this month who have yet to speak with police.

Particularly, they would like to speak with anyone who was, or spoke with the victim, Rodney Kelly in the evening of February 8, 2024 in Cumberland.

Investigators are also appealing for people to review any Dashcam video they may have from that night capturing travel in Cumberland and along the Comox Valley Parkway between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

A passerby found Kelly, who was riding his bike, on the Parkway near Minto Road. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

A suspect was arrested two days after the hit and run.

45-year-old Steven Squires of Cumberland has been charged with first degree murder and failing to stop after an accident causing death.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211.
