Recent rain has improved drought conditions on parts of Vancouver Island, but the province says water shortages remain a concern in several watersheds.

The latest B.C. Drought and Water Scarcity Bulletin says rainfall and thunderstorms over the past week have brought some relief to Vancouver Island, the South Coast and parts of southeast B.C.

On Vancouver Island, cooler temperatures and localized rainfall have improved flows in the Tsolum River watershed.

However, officials say groundwater levels remain below normal in several areas, reducing fish habitat and creating water temperatures that can stress salmon populations.

The province says reservoir releases are continuing on Vancouver Island to help maintain stream flows and protect salmon.

Looking ahead, warm temperatures are expected to continue across much of B.C. this week.

While some rain is possible in northern parts of the province, southern B.C. is expected to stay warm and mostly dry into next week.
