The Town of Comox is responding to residents who have had concerns about the gardens along Comox Hill.
The Town says the original message shared online concerning changes with the gardens did not include all the facts and the scope of work being completed.
The existing storm main is being replaced as and is being coordinated with the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project to minimize disruption, along with ensuring infrastructure reliability, and significantly reducing costs.
Relocating the storm main into the roadway isn’t feasible due to existing underground utilities and the need to avoid placing storm manholes within the cycling lane, which would pose safety concerns.
The Town says it recognizes the value and significance of the gardens along Comox Hill and efforts are being made to minimize the impact on the plants on the boulevard, while the construction team is working to preserve as much of the green space as possible.
Any significant plants that must be removed, including the ornamental rhododendrons, will be dug up, salvaged, stored, and replanted following construction.
Where opportunities allow, the Town says climate-resilient and native plant species will be planted, with the goal of renewing the natural beauty and biodiversity of this entrance to Comox.
