School District 72 is reporting strong gains in student learning, with new Foundation Skills Assessment results showing improvement in both literacy and numeracy across the district.

Superintendent Geoff Manning shared the update with the Board of Education, noting the results are based on local FSA data from fall 2025, compared to the most recent provincial report from the 2023-2024 school year.

While the district is still waiting for updated provincial figures, Manning said the local data clearly shows progress.

District-wide averages showed solid results at both tested grade levels. In Grade 4, 73-percent of students were on track or extending in literacy, with nearly 80 percent meeting that mark in numeracy.

In Grade 7, about 72-percent of students were on track or extending in literacy, while just over 62-percent reached that level in numeracy.

Those numbers are well above the district’s previous outcomes.

Some individual schools also stood out.

Ocean Grove Elementary reported 92 percent of Grade 4 students on track or extending in literacy, and 86 percent in numeracy.

At École Phoenix Middle School, Grade 7 literacy improved to 71-percent on track or extending, while numeracy, at 57-percent, was identified as an area still needing growth.

Manning said the improvement reflects the impact of the district’s literacy framework and early work in numeracy, along with consistent instructional approaches across schools.

Students were also better prepared for the assessment format itself, helping them feel more comfortable demonstrating what they know.

The district plans to continue using FSA results alongside classroom evidence to guide future decisions, with a continued focus on literacy and numeracy to support ongoing improvement.
