The Strathcona Regional District is inviting Area C residents to a pair of information sessions on the potential establishment of a Wharves Service.

The SRD has been provided funding from Transport Canada for wharves upgrades to Owen Bay (on Sonora Island), Surge Narrows (on Read Island) and Port Neville (in Johnstone Strait).

Transport Canada divested these three wharves to the SRD in 2014 and has provided funding to operate and maintain the wharves for ten years.

The deadline to complete necessary wharf upgrades using the Transport Canada funding is approaching.

Before cash can be spent, the SRD needs to establish a wharves service that would fund future operations and maintenance of the wharves.

If the SRD can't establish a service, the money heads back to Transport Canada.

The District currently owns six wharves in Area C, three of which are the Transport Canada divested wharves and three that are currently operated under the SRD Parks function.

The district wants to hear from tax payers on how to move forward. Two sessions will take place tomorrow: 11:00 am at the Quadra Community Centre and 2:15 pm at the Surge Narrows Bunk House.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.
