The Strathcona Regional District has recognized a local man for 40 years of volunteer service with Campbell River search and Rescue.

In addition to his SAR work, Steve Sierzputowski is a founding member of SRD’s Disaster Communications Team, which provides a crucial backup when regular communication systems, like telephone networks and email, are disrupted or unavailable.

SRD Manager of Emergency Services, Shaun Koopman, says there are no words that can truly capture what Steve has contributed to his community.

Campbell River Search and Rescue (CRSAR) is responsible for land and inland waterway search and rescue across a vast region, stretching from the Oyster River north to Port Hardy, east to Bute Inlet and portions of the BC mainland coast, and west to Nootka Island.

The area represents one of the largest SAR response zones in the province. The team works closely with neighbouring SAR groups, the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Canadian Forces 442 Rescue Squadron to provide response for missing and injured persons.

Keeping Our Word

The word "éy7á7juuthem" means “Language of our People” and is the ancestral tongue of the Homalco, Tla’amin, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations, with dialectic differences in each community.

It is pronounced "eye-ya-jooth-hem."
