The Strathcona Regional District is encouraging residents to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” in the Great BC ShakeOut later this month.

SRD Chair Mark Baker says the ShakeOut is a reminder for everyone to take a look at how prepared we are.

After the drill, Baker suggests you check your emergency kit, update your plan, and make sure your home or office is safe from things that could fall or break in an earthquake.

“A few small actions today can make a big difference when the ground starts to shake.”

To be counted, register at www.shakeoutbc.ca and have a drill on Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 am.

If your drill takes place in an area at risk of flooding after a major earthquake such as the Gold River Waterfront, Downtown Campbell River, Ehatis, Esperanza, Fair Harbour, Kyuquot, Oclucje, Tahsis, Yuquot or Zeballos then it is encouraged that you also include a post-earthquake evacuation into your drill.

This year, the SRD is offering community workshops and free first aid certification courses to provide residents in the regional district with the knowledge and skills to be better prepared for an earthquake.

The District says when building your household earthquake plan, take time to think through the specific needs of your family and home.

You’ll find additional resources, toolkits, and planning guides at www.srd.ca.
