Comox Valley RCMP are hoping an appeal for information will help find a Courtenay man, missing for six years.
Michael Gazetas was last seen on January 31, 2020. He left in his red 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck with B.C. licence plate HX4109.
Despite extensive searches at the time and ongoing investigative efforts, neither Michael nor his vehicle has been located.
Police say many new residents might be out exploring Vancouver Island’s backcountry and they are asking the public to remain observant in remote areas, especially in Northern Vancouver Island.
They say it remains possible that Michael’s vehicle may be in a location not visible from the road or in terrain that is difficult to reach.
Natural changes in the landscape over time - including erosion, fallen trees, and shifting vegetation - may reveal areas that were previously obscured.
Michael’s sisters, Calliope and Sophie, say they are not expecting a miracle - but want to keep the door open to hope.
“We’re asking anyone exploring the backcountry to keep their eyes open. The landscape changes over time, and something that wasn’t visible before may be visible now.”
Constable Monika Terragni says even the smallest detail can be significant.
“A vehicle part, disturbed terrain, an abandoned truck in a difficult-to-access area - any piece of information, no matter how minor it may seem, could help move this investigation forward.”
Terragni says the department’s commitment to Michael’s family has not changed and they will be following up on every piece of information provided.
Anyone who sees a red Ford Ranger with licence plate HX4109, or has information related to the disappearance of Michael Gazetas is asked to call Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file 2020-1779.
