The Village of Sayward and the Strathcona Regional District are providing an update on water conservation efforts and next steps following the Newcastle Creek landslide.
Ongoing turbidity issues remain in water drawn from Newcastle Creek after the landslide that occurred on October 23. As a result, the Village and the SRD are seeking additional support from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.
If approved, the funding would allow for a geotechnical assessment of the Newcastle Creek watershed, along with the preparation of a report outlining potential remediation and mitigation options.
As part of that work, a survey of the watershed is anticipated in early 2026, which would provide more detailed information to support the assessment.
Residents are being thanked for their continued efforts to conserve drinking water while Public Works crews continue work at the Water Treatment Plant and the Newcastle Creek water intake.
Officials say the Water Treatment Plant, water intake, and reservoir are currently operating well, and there are no new issues to report at this time.
If conditions change, residents will be notified through Alertable and the official communication channels of the Village of Sayward and the Strathcona Regional District.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
