The Conservative Party of British Columbia has removed John Rustad as both Party Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition.
In a statement released yesterday, the party said a majority of its caucus informed legal counsel that they no longer had confidence in Rustad’s leadership.
As a result, he has been formally removed from the role.
Following a caucus vote, Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford has been selected to serve as Interim Leader.
The party’s Board of Directors also passed a motion declaring Rustad professionally incapacitated under its constitution and therefore unable to continue as leader.
The Board has since ratified Halford’s appointment and says it respects the democratic will of caucus.
For his part, on X, Rustad said he has not resigned and he’s not going anywhere.
However, the Conservatives thanked Rustad for leading the party during a period of significant growth, offering their best wishes to him and his family as they move forward.
According to the party’s constitution, the Board of Directors will now begin organizing a leadership race. More details on that process will be released once the plan is finalized.
