The Strathcona Regional District has wrapped up its Alternative Approval Process for borrowing funds to redevelop the Rod Brind’Amour Arena — and the results are in.
Just over 18 hundred residents submitted forms opposing the borrowing bylaw — about five and a half percent of eligible voters across Campbell River and Area D. That’s well below the 10 percent threshold required to stop the proposal, meaning elector approval has been achieved.
The process, which ran from late July through September, sought authorization to borrow up to 57 million dollars for the Rod Brind’Amour Arena redevelopment — part of the larger REC-REATE Project at the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex.
Regional District Chair Mark Baker says the strong community response shows how much residents care about the future of the facility. He says the board will take time to carefully review the feedback before deciding how to move ahead.
The REC-REATE Project aims to modernize the aging recreation complex into a more inclusive, accessible, and multi-purpose community space — supporting wellness, sport, and recreation for all ages.
The SRD Board says it plans to move forward thoughtfully to ensure the redevelopment provides the greatest long-term value for the community.
