Residents across Campbell River and the surrounding area are being encouraged to practise how they would respond during an earthquake as part of this year’s Great British Columbia ShakeOut.
The annual province-wide earthquake drill will take place Thursday, October 15, at exactly 10:15 a.m.
Participants will practise the three basic steps recommended when strong shaking begins: Drop, Cover and Hold On.
That means dropping to the ground, taking cover underneath a sturdy desk or table when possible, and holding on until the simulated shaking stops.
Organizers say practising the response in advance can help people react quickly and instinctively during a real earthquake.
The drill also provides an opportunity for families, schools, businesses and other organizations to review their emergency plans and check their disaster supplies.
More than 868,000 people throughout B.C. participated in last year’s ShakeOut drill.
Individuals, families, schools and workplaces can register for this year’s event at Great BC ShakeOut.
