The Town of Comox is reminding the public about the dangers of soap, detergent, or other hazardous materials entering creeks and streams.
The Town says soap was found in a local creek earlier this month.
Even small amounts of soap, detergent, or other hazardous materials can be deadly to fish, aquatic insects, and sensitive ecosystems in the area.
Unlike wastewater from homes, which goes to a treatment plant, stormwater does not get treated.
After rain or snowmelt, stormwater runs across driveways, roofs, lawns, and streets, picking up anything in its path - including soap, oil, paint, pesticides, and chemicals - and flows directly into catch basins, ditches, stormwater ponds, and creeks.
You can visit Town of Comox to find info on how to dispose of certain materials properly.
