Another sign that Vancouver Island’s wildfire season is winding down: the remaining Category Two and Category Three open-fire prohibitions across parts of the Comox Valley have been lifted.
The change took effect at noon Wednesday in Union Bay, Fanny Bay, Hornby Island, Denman Island and the Ships Point Fire Protection Area.
Category Two and Three fires include larger outdoor burns commonly used for disposing of yard waste, grass, land-clearing debris and slash piles.
The change coincides with the Coastal Fire Centre rescinding its remaining open-fire prohibitions across the region, including the Campbell River area.
However, the end of the provincial and regional prohibitions does not mean residents can burn anything, anywhere.
Local bylaws and permit requirements remain in effect.
Campbell River residents should review current City restrictions before lighting an outdoor fire.
Comox Valley residents planning a larger burn are advised to visit Comox Valley RD Fire and contact their local fire department first.
