BC has lost another police officer on the job.
Ridge Meadows RCMP Constable Rick O’Brien was shot to death while executing a warrant on Friday in Coquitlam.
Two other officers were wounded in the incident.
“This is an extremely difficult and tragic day for our members at Ridge Meadows detachment, Coquitlam RCMP where this incident occurred, and the greater RCMP and RCMP family,” said B.C. RCMP Deputy Comm. Dwayne McDonald.
“We all join in expressing our heartfelt condolences to Const. O’Brien’s family, who I had the opportunity to visit with earlier today.”
Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth says all three officers are shining examples of the extraordinary individuals who chose to take on the challenging mantle of protecting the public, adding that the death of an officer ‘’is a stark reminder of the dangers police face to keep us safe.’’
A 25-year old man has been charged with first degree murder, and attempted murder with a firearm.
A GoFundMe campaign, organized by the National Police Federation Benevolent Foundation, in partnership with the National Police Federation, has so far raised more than $100 thousand for O’Brien’s family. He leaves behind a wife and six children.
