With wildfire activity increasing across British Columbia, the provincial government is encouraging everyone to pre-register for Emergency Support Services before an emergency happens.

Officials say registering in advance can speed up access to assistance if an evacuation is ordered.

People who are registered may be able to receive financial support by e-Transfer without first visiting an evacuee reception centre, giving them more flexibility to find temporary accommodation.

Heading into this past weekend, about 1,200 properties across B.C. were under evacuation order, while another 6,400 were under evacuation alert.

Emergency Support Services helps people meet basic needs during an evacuation, including accommodation, food, clothing and other essentials.

The province is also reminding residents to update their household emergency plans, pack a grab-and-go bag with at least 72 hours of supplies for every family member, including pets, and stay informed through local governments, First Nations and EmergencyInfoBC.

Drivers are also being urged to check for evacuation alerts, road closures and changing travel conditions before heading out.
