The Federal Government is giving interprovincial ferry riders in Eastern Canada a break on fares, and that’s not sitting well with Premier David Eby.
The Prime Minister announced Monday that tolls are being cut on the Confederation Bridge and fares for interprovincial ferries in Atlantic Canada and Québec.
Premier Eby says the federal government already subsidizes Eastern Canadian ferry users with a $300 subsidy per each $1 that a B.C. ferry user gets.
While Eby acknowledges that the cut for Eastern Canadians was a follow-through on an election promise from Prime Minister Mark Carney, he says it’s tough for British Columbians to see.
The Premier says he’s asking the government to have “a serious look” at their policies to ensure fair treatment for BC ferry users.
Marine Atlantic is getting funding to reduce fares by 50% for passengers and passenger vehicles on routes between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, along with other federally supported routes on Eastern Canada Ferry Services.
Also, tolls on the Confederation Bridge, linking New Brunswick and PEI, are going down from $50 to $20.
