Port Hardy Hospital's emergency department reopened earlier than expected Thursday after Island Health secured additional staffing, cutting short a planned daytime closure.
The hospital's emergency department had originally been scheduled to close from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 15th, because of limited care provider availability.
However, Island Health announced that additional staffing support had been secured, allowing emergency services to resume at 10:30 a.m., approximately six and a half hours earlier than originally anticipated.
The department was expected to remain open for the rest of its regular operating hours, until 5 p.m.
The reopening provided some relief for North Island residents who have experienced several temporary interruptions to emergency services at the hospital.
Staffing Challenges Continue
Thursday's interruption was not the first staffing-related disruption at Port Hardy Hospital this week.
The emergency department also experienced reduced operating hours on Sunday and Monday, highlighting the ongoing challenges of maintaining consistent emergency care in smaller and more remote communities.
Island Health has attributed the temporary service interruptions to limited care provider availability.
Despite Thursday's emergency department closure, the health authority confirmed that inpatient services continued operating normally.
Island Health apologized for the inconvenience caused by the interruptions and thanked residents for their patience and understanding.
The health authority also acknowledged the efforts of health-care workers who continue providing services despite staffing challenges.
What Residents Should Know
