Pope Francis has offered a second apology while expressing shame and sorrow for the role the Catholic Church played in the ``deplorable'' residential school system.
The pope is in Quebec where he said yesterday that the residential school system tried to strip Indigenous people of their language, culture, and worldview.
Francis says his time in Canada has left him with a firm desire to move forward on reconciliation and to help heal the deep wounds of the past.
He arrived in the city on Wednesday afternoon. He held private meetings with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Quebec City’s Citadelle and later addressed a small room of Indigenous dignitaries and residential school survivors.
Francis has other events in Quebec today and a brief stop in Iqaluit tomorrow before heading home to Vatican City.
